Social media is the new face of daily communications, and I'll be exploring them here.

The Way we See the World

For the last week or so I have been conducting informal empirical research into the ways in which various organisations use social networking to spread their messages. It's been an interesting and exhausting experience, attending the SEACC and ACCESS Habitable Planet Workshop at Rhodes University.

The idea behind the workshop is to provide the delegates with knowledge of Earth Systems Science and a basic introduction to climate change and the various representations thereof.

Of course, you can't about climate change without talking about Al Gore and his emotive film riddled with errors, 'An Inconvenient Truth'; nor can you prevent yourself from referencing 'The Great Global Warming Swindle', probably more aptly named 'The Great Misrepresentation'. Being that I am interested in media, hearing the scientists discuss these films was rather a highlight for me.

However, more than that, the South East African Climate Consortium was well represented and in attendance were the head of the Steering Committee, the Sustainability Manager and the Student Forum President (previously 'Committee') who arranged a meeting with potential joinees.

The delegates came from all over the country, and being that we were all interested in climate change it seemed most logical to organise communication across the country without wasting fuel and so you can find SEACC and SEACC SF on Facebook. They will be using various digital media to communicate across the country and to bring talks to other campuses. The first goal for the SEACC SF is to make presentations to COP 17 (to be held next year in Cape Town) and so discussions are well underway to begin pulling things together.
